Phnom Penh Braces for Traffic Disruptions Amid CPP's Capital Council Election Campaign Kickoff
PHNOM PENH, 16 May 2024 — The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) is set to initiate its campaign for the 4th Legislative Council with a large-scale opening ceremony on May 17, starting at 6:00 AM. The event, which will see significant participation from party supporters and members, will commence at the CPP's headquarters on Maida Street in Trung Moan Village, Sangkat O Bek Kam, Khan Sen Sok, and Phnom Penh.
Approximately 10,000 individuals from various districts are expected to converge at the site, making their way from different parts of the capital. This massive gathering is anticipated to impact traffic significantly, especially along some of the main arteries of the city.
Mr. Khuong Sreng, the Governor of Phnom Penh, has issued a plea for public patience and understanding during this period. "Given the large number of party members and supporters expected to attend, we foresee considerable traffic disruptions. We advise those without urgent needs to avoid the areas directly affected by the march and gathering to minimize congestion," stated Governor Sreng.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has also called on the public to cooperate by steering clear of the event’s path and related areas during the campaign procession to help reduce traffic build-up.
The campaign for the Capital Council, along with Provincial, Municipal, District, and Khan Council elections, will span eight days, from May 17 to May 24. The election itself is scheduled for May 26, with five political parties in the fray, including the Cambodian People's Party, the Khmer Will Party, the National Forces Party, FUNCINPEC, and the Khmer United National Party. The electoral process will be facilitated across the nation with 11,622 polling stations set up in 25 capitals and provinces.
Residents and commuters in Phnom Penh are advised to plan their routes carefully during this period to avoid delays and support a smooth electoral process.
